Tiffani Thiessen on Last Call with Carson Daly
February 19 2003
Carson: Listen, you know my first guest from two shows that strongly influenced my adolescene and the man that I've become today. Seriously, Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills 90210. Absolutely. Seriously, Screech was like a little sister to me. Now from the new fox show, Fastlane, say hi to Tiffani Thiessen everybody.
Carson: Make yourself at home.
Tiffani: Thank you!
Carson: (to audience) Yeah why don't you start yelling out some crap now! I have to warn you ..this audience it's like the WWF has just ended and they all came here—
Tiffani: And they all came here afterwards!
Carson: Yeah. Let's go see Carson's new show.
Tiffani: Wowww. Well very nice, thank you!
Carson: I'm warning you. Go easy on her. How are you Tiffani?
Tiffani: I'm really good. I'm really good, how are you?
Carson: I'm doing very good.
Tiffani: It's been awhile since I've seen you.
Carson: Yes, how long has it been? Like uh
Tiffani: Like a few years.
Carson: Three years or something.
Tiffani: I think more than that.
Carson: You say it like you have dirt on me or something —
Tiffani: No! Not at all.
Carson: Like you wanna ask me some questions to get the thing goin'?
Tiffani: No, not at all! No, MTV I think it was on TRL.
Carson: Yeah I think it was.
Tiffani: Jennifer Love Hewitt was on.
Carson: Oh there you go again! What's with all the —
Tiffani: I swear to god!
Carson: This is like Barbara Walters let's pick on Carson night.
Tiffani: No, not at all! I was just remembering she was actually on the same show I was.
Carson: I spent 6 hours working on your interview and noiw I'm getting it from the audience and you.
Tiffani: That's what happens...
Carson: Why do I work so hard?
Carson: And what? That was the day she was there and you were also there?
Tiffani: Yeah it was. Absolutely.
Carson: That was a good time, right?
Tiffani: Yeah, it was!
Carson: Yeah, she was a nice girl.
Tiffani: Yeah she was a very nice girl.
Carson: You guys run into each other since then?
Tiffani: Uh, you know what? I actually haven't seen her probably in about a year or so, but I've known her since she was really young, so.
Tiffani: Really really young.
Carson: I have been to — but I know you get this all the time, but I'll go and just ask the stupid question. You dropped the Amber from your name.
Tiffani: Yeah I did.
Carson: I was thinking that she (Jennifer Love Hewitt) goes by Love — why do you —
Tiffani: Yeah, ya know that's strange to think about that. There's a lot — I think back in that little area, you know it was in the 80s, everybody would have three names. You know Mark—Paul Gosselaar was my co—star and there was a lot of people. Brian Austin Green and other co—stars. You know they all had three names. I don't know what it was. It was just enough for me. I didn't need it anymore — anybody wants it, it's up for grab!
Carson: Yeah, it's for sale on Ebay.
Tiffani (laughs): It's for sale!
Carson: Uh..yeah I interviewed Joey Lawrence like on MTV one time.
Carson: Right — that's what I did I was like 'Yay!' Here's here, he came out —
Tiffani (imitates a fan in the audience): Oh he's cute!
Carson: — Tiffani and sat down and I'm like 'Joey it's good to have you here' And he's like 'Call me Joseph' (?)
Tiffani: It's Joseph, right. Well like Ricki Shrodder, now it's Rick Shrodder.
Tiffani: Yeah. So Tiff, Tiff Thiessen.
Carson: Lil Bow Wow it's just Bow Wow now.
Tiffani: Bow Wow! Right!
Carson and Tiffani (same time): Snoop Dogg!
Carson: He was snoopy I think originally.
Tiffani: Yeah I went to school with him.
Carson: Did you really?
Tiffani: It was Marshall Junior High in Long Beach. We went to school together.
Carson: When it was Snoop Dogg?
Carson: Wow. How much weed did he smoke then?
Tiffani: A LOT.
Tiffani: A lot and then I saw him years later and he was still smoking in the dressing room.
Carson: Yeah and then he —
Tiffani: *cough* *cough* I went to school with you! And he's like 'Ohh. Marshal!'
Carson: What was Snoop Dogg like in high school other than just being high?
Tiffani: Um. He...he loved the ladies, actually.
Carson: I'm sure he did.
Tiffani: He loved the ladies, yeah.
Carson: Did you go out with him?
Tiffani: No. I did not. (laughs) I did not, no.
Carson: You were really smart though in high school, right? Weren't you like super smart?
Tiffani: I...I don't know. Was I? I don't know!
Carson: I'm just trying to think —
Tiffani: I mean I loved school actually, and it was kind of sad for me because when I started working I had to get tutored and I had left school. I left junior high.
Carson: How crazy was it be doing like Saved by the Bell —
Tiffani: Really crazy.
Carson: Those shows, while you were just an adolescent self growing up, right at that time when you were probably ya know, experimenting and going through a lot your first —
Tiffani (smiles): Experimenting? Right. Um you know it was definitely very strange. I mean the strangest thing is that you get taken away from school and you get tutored only like 3 hours a day.
Carson: Which is great.
Tiffani: Which is great, totally fine, but then you're working like the next 8 hours, ya know? So you had a really long day and you missed out on a lot of stuff like prom and graduation and things like that. And then on the other hand, you know you were traveling all across the country and around the world. When I was on Saved by the Bell we'd travel so much, me and Mark—Paul doing autograph signing kind of like how The New Kids on the Block would do.
Tiffani: And then we would go to all the malls and all that kind of stuff. And do autograph signings and people wanted a lock of my hair and I'm like "Oh my god, I'm 15! What!" Ya know? I was scared out of my mind because it was a pretty big phenomenon to be on that show for awhile. Carson: And you and Elizabeth Berkley, both on that show, as I always seemed much older. Ya know. Like I was looking at the time I was watching it. You guys seemed very mature.
Tiffani: But girls do mature faster than me. I mean come on.
Carson: Nah, yeah I do agree with ya.
Tiffani: They do! We do!
Carson: You know what I always liked a lot of my friends always listened to Alyssa Milano from from Jujubox.
Carson: Was always their crush. She was a little east coast vibe from East Coast, California. I liked the girl in Charles in Charles. That girl was hot.
Tiffani: Ahhhh. Well both of them are really quite attractive.
Carson: Yeah, but the other one wasn't that hot then.
Tiffani: Have you seen her lately?
Tiffani: Oh she's very pretty.
Carson: Oh do you know them?
Tiffani: Oh well actually I did that show a long time ago.
Carson: Charles in Charge?
Tiffani: Uh huh.
Carson: Uh, that must have been a dream!
Tiffani: Yeah I was really young. I was actually 16 years old and I had a date um...Scott Bayo. I actually was his girlfriend for that episode. It was quite interesting.
Carson: So tell me about Saved by the Bell, those years when you would travel. I just assumed that everybody in that cast would just be hooking up and everything. Like give me some dirt on...
Tiffani: Well we had an E! True Hollywood Story on...
Carson: I missed it.
Tiffani: You missed it?
Carson: Well give me the cliff notes on that. What was some scandolous thing that happened?
Tiffani: Well talking about how we all used to date each other which I thought was kind of funny. I mean it wasn't THAT bad. But I guess it was a little bit like that.
Carson: Well who were you going out with on the show?
Tiffani: Um, I dated I dated...I guess I did. I guess I dated Mark—Paul and Mario, I don't know.
Carson: You dated them both?
Tiffani: I don't know, I guess. I mean you're kids. I mean it's like you know, a peck on the cheek then on the lips, once in awhile. I mean is that dating? I don't know. I guess it was.
Carson: Sure it is!
Carson: It is to me!
Tiffani: Yeah but you know —
Carson: I just discovered hugging.
Tiffani: Yeah really!
Carson: Ay, it's good too!
Tiffani: Well Mark—Paul, ya know, I was actually quite close to just because we traveled so much together and he was a very close friend for a really long time.
Tiffani: So —
Carson: Well it's sorta the funny thing we all kind of poked about the show when were all watching it.
Carson: Um, but I watched some of the new sort of on the new NBC, they have these what? City guides?
Tiffani: Yeah, yeah.
Carson: These types of shows —
Tiffani: Well they kind of kept that whole slot in the morning on NBC to be kind of live shows now. We were the first ones to go on.
Carson: Well you guys all went on to do very good stuff since then.
Tiffani: Yeah we all —
Carson: Except Screech. What happened to him? Did you see him?
Tiffani: I don't know he's doing, he's like boxing on TV —
Carson: Did you see him fighting —
Tiffani: Yeahhhh. I was a little real scared for him.
Carson: Was he —
Tiffani: I was a little scared for him, yeah.
Carson: When I was at a radio station in San Francisco, I introduced him to his rapping. He was like this white guy Beastie Boy?
Tiffani: Well I've learned so much about him in the last few years. Like he has a band, he's a stand—up comic. Like there's all these different things that I NEVER knew about him.
Tiffani: Yeah I haven't seen though in awhile.
Carson: Do you watch a lot like he did this E Star Days or something?
Tiffani: I heard about that. I didn't see that.
Carson: with Screech. Who would want — I mean ya know?
Tiffani: I don't know! I couldn't —
Carson: Do you watch a lot of the reality stuff?
Tiffani: I watch some. I watch some. American Idol I do watch...
Carson: I heard you went to the American Idol finals.
Tiffani: I did...
Tiffani: Why do you look at me like that! I like it! It's good for you!
Carson: I couldn't see that Ryan kidnapped you and put you in the trunk and dragged you down for that.
Tiffani: No he didn't drag me. I just liked watching those kids. It was kind of cool to watch trhem. I mean that is such my guts to get up there and sing their heart out in front of these people and you know, someone like Simon Kell telling them they STINK, you know? It was so sad! But I couldn't stop watching it!
Tiffani: So ya know. It was so addicting!
Carson: Um...so ya know. Saved by the Ball. Europe is huge. They have like a 24—hour —
Carson: They have stations that play a marathon of —
Tiffani: Where are my checks! No, just kidding.
Carson: Were they crazier than the Americans when you would go over there?
Tiffani: Yeah absolutely. I would have to totally agree with that. When we used to tour over there it was even probably triple the amount of people that were coming to show up to these autograph signings and the publicity we used to do over there. It was nuts! It was crazy!
Carson: When you went back and when you went to 90210, how did you get that? Did you meet Tori Spelling and did he hook you up?
Tiffani: I actually. I mean I just auditioned for the role. Shannon Doherty had just left and they were looking for a new person to come on and not take her place in general, but just to fill the spot to a certain degree and I went in and auditioned for it just like everybody else and I got the role.
Carson: Have you ever been to Aaron Spelling's house?
Tiffani: I haven't, no.
Carson: I just hear it's sick —
Tiffani: I hear there's a bowling alley, I hear there's a theatre. I hear there's like a wrapping room. Which I guess where Candy Spelling does all her wrapping, like for gifts and stuff like that.
Carson: Really? Oh like a wrapping room.
Tiffani: A wrapping room.
Carson: Oh no like Hip—Hop.
Tiffani: Could you imagine Candy Spelling?
Carson: If 50 cent was sounded by Aaron Spelling's basement ya know?
Tiffani: Tori and Randy down there, yeah.
Carson: I just seen this whole thing about. I've never met Mr. Spelling. I'm sure he's a —
Tiffani: He's a very sweet man.
Carson: I mean it just seems like there's Tori, his daugher. It just seems like she brings home her hot friends and then they just pop up on like Melrose Place or like 90210.
Tiffani: Well I have to say, I never met her before so I did not get the role that way!
Carson: After 90210 and Saved by the Bell, were you worried that you wouldn't get work again?
Tiffani: You know it's funny, I think there's always a fear, no matter what you do you know that you wanna, to a certain degree have a job and work, but there's always um. My parents instilled (?) this to me a long time just to have an interfaith, in myself that I know where I'm supposed to be where I'm supposed to be in every moment for the right reasons so —
Carson: Well you're getting a lot of the offers like Elizabeth Burkley, when she got with those Showgirls.
Tiffani: I didn't get offered Showgirls, no.
Carson: Yeah, but did you like that like 'Okay she's out of the teen thing, she's looking to do a 180 and get naked and things like that.'
Carson: I have no idea where this is going. This seems like a good question.
Tiffani: Uhhh...yeah. On paper, it is right?
Carson: Tiffani Amber Thiessen — she's done with that whole crap now, ya know. Hollywood has that way to sort of — like Alyssa Milano went through that.
Tiffani: Yeah. right right right right. Well I think, you know, to a certain degree. As an actor, you always wanna challenge yourself and I always like to do roles that are different from the next. Um...but I'm getting naked was just something I wanted to do.
Tiffani: So I haven't done that in awhile.
Carson: Well we are leading up to a very sexy scene with Jaime Pressly on Fastlane and also a Woody Allen movie.
Carson: Since then, we'll talk more about Tiffani Thiessen when we get back!
Carson: Well good morning here. Tiffani Thiessen. Supergraphs are playing in a second. Tell me. Hollywood Ending was a film that opened a can last year at the festival —
Tiffani: Yeah it did.
Carson: Uh Woody Allen film —
Tiffani: It was crazy.
Carson: Now just take me back to that again.
Tiffani: Well actually it was really strange. I was in L.A. and I got a phone call from um from my agent and my manager saying that Woody Allen got a hold of one of my tapes and —
Carson: Well stop right there. That's a big deal!
Tiffani: Are you kidding? I almost had to pull over. It was almost like the worst — you know you don't hear things like that. 'Woody Allen got a hold of your tape and wants to meet you'. It was like the craziest thing.
Carson: And what made your agent and manager call you at the same time?
Tiffani: Well you know something — right. It's either good or really bad, you know? So —
Carson: So what was your first thought? Like holy crap this is awesome?
Tiffani: Like why? I was like, I didn't understand why. How did he get a hold of my tape and what is this about? And then I just stopped the questions and I was like 'Okay I'm gonna go'. And I met him, here. I had to fly up to New York and I met him here. And in the movie actually, I auditioned originally auditioned for Debra Messing's part and I was a little too young for that part. So! Just a little bit! So I guess I made some impression on him that he wrote the small part that is actually in the movie. And so I came out and did that little part.
Carson: That's awesome and you went to the Cannes Film Festival. Have you ever been before?
Tiffani: Never have been in my life.
Carson: Is it just a boose fest? Is that the deal?
Tiffani: Have you ever been?
Tiffani: It is probably, I mean. I really didn't have much to go by except for what I had seen on TV or in pictures and stuff like that, but when I went. First of all, to be standing next to Woody Allen is one thing, but you go up these famous red stairs and you turn around and there's just thousands and thousands of paparazzi just, ya know, taking pictures and flashes and then beyond the paparazzi there's thousands and thousands of people on the streets and just applauding. It was like the most amazing experience I've ever had in my life. I mean it's right in my head. I'll never forget it.
Tiffani: It was great.
Carson: Wouldn't it be funny if you heard applauds and turned around and Screech was right there?
Carson: And you know you that was for me. And he's all "Hey!" (carson waves)
Tiffani: That would be pretty interesting! (nods) Yes, that would be.
Carson: And I understand, did you fly home on the concord?
Tiffani: I got to fly home on a conord! (Tiffani's eyes popping out for excitement).
Carson: Now what was the concord like?
Tiffani: It was pretty crazy. Ya know, I didn't know what to expect with that either except that I know it goes really fast. But I had to get back to New York to promote and start promoting Fastlane for Fox so I had to fly back cause it was the only time I could get back early enough and uh, I thought it was gonna be like a regular sized plane. It's not. It's pretty small. And, but it's really luxury and it's really beautiful and I flew from Paris to New York in three hours, which normally takes like six hours.
Tiffani: So it was pretty — and they had a little screen that timed out when you would go through the sound barrier.
Carson: Right. When you're midflight, is it just like any of us being on a plane, or do you actually feel how much faster you're going?
Tiffani: You kind of feel how much faster you're going in the beginning, absolutely.
Carson: And is the turbulance just normal turbulance?
Tiffani: No, there's nothing. It's totally smooth. There's nothing at all.
Carson: How much does it take on a Concord? Do you know?
Tiffani: Oh gosh, I didn't pay —
Carson: I heard it's like five grand.
Tiffani: I think it's like five grand. It's really expensive. Yeah, I didn't have to pay for it.
Carson: Yeah, right thank god!
Carson: Um, so let's talk about. Fox has this show Fastlane of which you've all seen. I think we have reruned some of it on MTV now.
Tiffani: (nods) Yeah we did. Yeah we do, absolutely. Like I own MTV right. (jokes) You do right!
Carson: Like FOX owns MTV. Like you called me and like 'Carson you purposely make Sunday nights really huge'.
Carson: I mean McG's is a famous video director. He's done everything from Korn to Smash Mouth, hundreds of videos
Tiffani: Yeah TONS.
Carson: Created the show, right?
Tiffani: Yes, yes he did and also Charlies Angels which he just finished shooting the second one. He is the one who created this with John Macanmire, another one of our executive producers, and he really wanted to do this really cool, fast paced. Amazing, very music video—like feature film—like TV show that's never been done on TV yet. And which is Fastlane, so ya know.
Carson: Right. And you know Bill Bellamy, who is of course an old friend of mine.
Tiffani: Yes, yes.
Carson: Did you him before...?
Tiffani: Yes, I did. He interviewed me on MTV with Mark—Paul when I was doing Saved by the Bell at the Hampton's many many movies ago.
Carson: That was crazy. That was our first beach house.
Tiffani: Yeah, isn't that crazy.
Carson: In fact, we're going back to Hampton this summer.
Tiffani: Are you? Yeah it was really strange. And then Peter, of course, who is my other co—star is my best friends husband so it's a very close—net cast.
Carson: So does everybody ask you if you have a kissing scene with him, it's gonna be really weird cause of your best friend..?
Tiffani (smiles): Yeah, we don't talk about that. We move along! He's got the guest stars to deal with. He doesn't need to deal with me!
Carson: Now with the show. They, I heard that they were talking about exploding cars and all that and you know you're the boss and everything. Do you still do your own stunds and...
Tiffani: Yeah every once in awhile they let me out of the canaster everyone once in awhile, absolutely. Carson: And do you get hurt?
Tiffani: Yeah, well I do have...I have seven stitches in my arm. I had a fight scene I had to do and, uh, of course I'm fighting in these big heals like this big right? Like a real cop would right? And I slip on the grass because it was real slippery and my hand went right into the truck and just sliced my arm.
Carson: Oh god that's FOX for making girls fight in high heals. Yeah, this is great.
Carson: What television is this? Uh I'll set up this scene and we'll show everyone.
Tiffani: Uh this scene actually a scene where I'm getting attacked by these guys who are trying to kill me. They have a hit on me and I'm running for dear life.
Carson: Okay it's called Fastlane, Tiffani Thiessen. Let's take a look.
[cut to Fastlane clip]
Carson: That's good television!
Carson: I like that. I'd watch that. I like it! Very good.
Tiffani: Yeah, that was particularly one of my favorites just because I actually got to jump off that bridge. It was like 35 feet.
Carson: Ohh, but Tiff one of my favorites was
Tiffani: Oh okay.
Carson: was the scene with her. Did you guys see this the one with her in the jacuzzi?
Tiffani: Ohhh really!
Carson: A little girl—on—girl action. Tell me about that VERY slowly.
Tiffani: You're pressuring me about this, aren't you?
Carson: Yes, absolutely. I haven't talked to her yet.
Tiffani: You haven't talked to her about it?
Tiffani: Yeah she's a very sweet girl. Very very sweet. It was a little odd for me. She's so petite. I felt so manly over her, ya know? I felt like I was overbearing. I was like so big.
(Carson's smiling; crowd laughs)
Carson: I think we all had that problem.
Tiffani: Ohh yeah, it was quite interesting, but it was fun. The only problem was, was that they actually didn't heat the jacuzzi that day. Yeah, so me and Jaime had to suffer with the other girl, I think it was Colleen with no heat.
Carson: You two were the ONLY ones suffering during that scene of promising (?).
Tiffani: Yeah I know, I know.
Carson: Was it awkward for you though? Honestly, was it a bit weird?
Tiffani: No. I think what was weird about it was the whole crew like (tiffani makes a starring face) the whole time, so ya know. It wasn't that weird for me.
Carson: Did you like it?
(tiffani and crowd laughs)
Tiffani: I mean uh
Carson: Is it something you could do?
Tiffani: I did it!
Carson: Okay, good! Fantastic! Say no more.
Tiffani: Thank god, Jaime's an attractive woman, you know.
Carson: You know it's funny when they did that scene the ratings came up 32% higher than the demographic of ages 18—49.
Tiffani: You're right.
Carson: You'd think that FOX would like take a spin—off, ya know.
Tiffani: And it's me, the show just being me and Jaime right?
Carson: Check out Jamie Pressly's new show in a jacuzzi for an hour straight every Friday night just talking.
Tiffani: No thank you.
Carson: I know I would be there. You're a sweetheart to be here.
Tiffani: Thank you very much!
Carson: It's good to see you! Congratulations on everything!
Tiffani Thiessen everybody!
